The 13th European Taekwondo Union (ETU) European Poomsae Championships successfully began on the Greek island of Rhodes today with action in 13 categories.

The Palais De Sport stadium in Faliraki welcomed 524 athletes from the 28 countries for the first of two days of competition.

Currently not on the Olympic programme, poomsae is a non-sparring event where individuals or teams perform a "sequence of movements arranged in a meaningful order in response to attacks from multiple imaginary assailants".

Denmark dominated the women's recognised poomsae competitions, winning two gold medals.

Eva Sandersen took the junior event and her compatriot Annaline Soeberg claimed the under-30 crown.

Nina Bansal of Norway maintained the Scandinavian dominance as she was victorious in the under-40 event.

Spain's Soo Mi Jo Lee lifted the under-50 crown.

Another Spaniard, Samuel Meilan Fernandez, winner of the gold medal at the inaugural World Taekwondo Federation World Beach Championships also held in Rhodes last week, maintained his form, winning the men's under-40 recognised poomsae gold medal.

Namik Konanc of Turkey proved to be too strong in the under-50 competition and Joachim Wien won the under-30 gold medal.

Denmark's Nikolai Kronborg followed compatriots Sandersen and Soeberg by reaching the top of the podium in the men's junior division.

There was also action in freestyle poomsae competitions today.

Turkey dominated both of the pairs competitions.

Gold medals were won in both the under and over-17 categories.

Their dominance did not extend to the mixed team event however, as Turkey were pipped to the gold medal by Germany.

The Turkish squad did manage to leave with the silver medal in front of Spain, who completed the podium in third.

Action is due to conclude in Rhodes tomorrow.
