China claimed a surprise victory over the Netherlands in the BNP Paribas World Team Cup women’s final in Sardinia today.

The Dutch were hoping to defend the title they claimed last year, but found themselves against a determined Chinese team, who had impressed throughout the competition.

Huimin Huang raised the possibility of the top seeds being upset in the final, as the Chinese player secured a tightly fought 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 victory over world number five Aniek van Koot.

A defeat for the Dutch moved a step closer when Zhenzhen Zhu won the opening set 6-1 against Diede de Groot.

De Groot won the second set 7-5 to force a decider, but she was unable to complete the comeback as Zhu clinched the third 6-2.

With the shock victory for China having been secured in the singles matches, the doubles rubber was not played.

The United States finished third by beating Switzerland 2-0.

The men’s final between defending champions France and 2015 winners Britain will take place tomorrow.

Britain were in action in the men’s quad semi-finals, with their tie against the United States having to be settled in the doubles rubber.

Bryan Barten beat Antony Cotterill 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to put the United States into a 1-0 lead, but Andy Lapthorne overcame David Wagner 6-4, 7-5 to level the score.

Lapthorne and Cotterill then combined to win the doubles match on tiebreak, after both teams claimed a set, with the score ending 6-4, 6-7, 10-7.

Israel will provide the opposition in the final, after they recorded a 2-1 win against Japan.
