Portugal’s Luis Goncalves will be one of the key names to look out for as the World Para Athletics Grand Prix series continues in Italian city Rieti this weekend.

The three-day event, which is scheduled to begin tomorrow, doubles as the Italian Open Championships and takes place at the Raul Guidobaldi Stadium.

Goncalves, the reigning world champion in the 400 metres T12, finished third at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games with a personal best time of 49.54sec.

The 29-year-old will be competing in Rieti as he continues preparations for the defence of his global crown at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London, where competition is due to be held from July 14 to 23.

Among the others athletes in action on the men’s side will be Algeria’s Mohamed Berrahal, who set African records in the 200m and 400m T51 events at the Dubai Grand Prix in March.

The 37-year-old, who took silver in the 100m T51 at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, will be competing for medals over 100m, 200m and 400m in Rieti.

Also competing will be home favourite Oney Tapia, the 41-year-old Paralympic discus F11 silver medallist.

Last year’s European champion will be looking to improve his personal best of 42.56m and challenge the world record, set by Brazilian Paralympic champion Alessandro Rodrigo last month, of 44.66m.

Tapia’s compatriot Assunta Legnante is among the stand-out athletes on the women’s side.

The 38-year-old was one of five Italians to medal at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, winning shot put F12 gold to add to her world and European titles.

Legnante was born with congenital glaucoma in both eyes and after her sight worsened in 2009, she lost the vision in her right eye.

Having represented her country at the Beijing 2008 Olympics and then gone onto compete at the London 2012 Paralympics, she became the first female Italian track and field athlete to compete at both Games.

Also competing in Rieti will be South Africa’s Ilse Hayes in what will be her last World Para Athletics Grand Prix prior to her planned retirement after the World Para Athletics Championships.

The 31-year-old six-time world champion will take on the 100m and 200m in Rieti.

She tops the world rankings in the shorter sprint after clocking 12.40 on home soil last month.

Canada’s Pamela LeJean will be looking to make her mark too in the F53 field events.

The 32-year-old made her international debut at the 2013 World Championships in Lyon in France, where she won shot put bronze.

Silver in the shot put F53 then followed at the 2015 World Championships in Qatar's capital Doha, but the Canadian finished an agonising fourth at Rio 2016.
