Thordur Arni Hjaltested has become the new President of the National Paralympic Committee of Iceland ©NPC of Iceland

Thordur Arni Hjaltested has been elected as President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Iceland after a vote at their General Assembly.

He steps up to the head role at the organisation after spending 31 years on the NPC of Iceland management team.

Hjaltested will be replacing Svein Aki Luoviksson, who had been President since 1996.

Alongside Hjaltested, who has also served as chairman of the Icelandic Teachers, seven other people were elected onto the governing body’s Central Board.

Johann Arnarson has been elected as vice-president.

Halldor Sævar Guðbergsson has become a member of the Central Board along with Matthildur and Margaret Kristjánsdóttir.

Deputy roles have been taken up by Jon Heidar, Linda K. Kristjánsdóttir and Thor Jonsson.

In 10 appearances at the Summer Paralympics, Iceland have won 84 medals.

The country has also appeared at three Winter Paralympics, but have not won a medal.
