Britteny Cox and Scotty James secured the women's and men's athlete of the year prizes respectively at the Ski and Snowboard Australia Awards in Melbourne.

Both athletes enjoyed successful campaigns over the past season as they each claimed World Championships gold, as well as the International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup crowns in their respective disciplines.

Moguls skier Cox topped the podium at the Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships in Sierra Nevada in March to become the first woman to win a world title in the discipline.

The 22-year-old also finished at the summit of the FIS Moguls and Aerials World Cup standings as she won seven golds and two bronze during the season.

Snowboarder James successfully defended his halfpipe World Championships gold medal in the Spanish resort.

He clinched the superpipe gold medal at this year's in Aspen.

The 22-year-old ended the World Cup season in top spot as he won the halfpipe crystal globe.

"You couldn’t ask for two better ambassadors for our sport," Ski and Snowboard Australia chief executive Michael Kennedy.

"Scotty and Britt are not only at the top of their game in their respective sports but are two of the most humble and genuine athletes I have ever met.

"It has been a privilege to watch their journey from 15-year-olds at their first Olympics in Vancouver to world champions."

Alpine skier Mitch Gourley was named Para-Snowsport Athlete of the Year for a second year in a row.

He replicated the achievements of compatriots Cox and James by winning the giant slalom title at the Para World Championships in Tarvisio in January and the World Cup.

"The spread of performances across so many of our snowsport disciplines and events is unprecedented and demonstrates the breadth and depth of our programmes," added Kennedy.

"We are genuinely excited about our prospects in South Korea but there is still a lot of work to do and the Winter sports are an unbelievably competitive environment.”
