A campaign has been launched to get funding for a new baseball stadium in Israel.

It comes after the nation experienced success at the World Baseball Classic last month, which saw them finish top in their first round group before finishing in sixth place overall on their first appearance at the competition.

Currently, the country has no stadium specifically for baseball, but now a GoFundMe campaign has been set up by officials from the sport's national governing body, the Israel Association of Baseball, to raise $575,000 (£446,000/€528,000) to build the venue.

The Jewish Baseball Fund is also planning to construct other facilities around the country in order to help grow the sport there.

Land has already been found for the venue in Beit Shemesh, about 30 kilometres away from capital city Jerusalem, with a special ground-breaking ceremony taking place in January.

Along with the stadium, the facilities will also include two youth fields, batting cages, lights and stands.

Following their success at the World Baseball Classic, Israel has moved up to 19th in the world rankings, the best position they have ever reached.
