The 19-year-old, the second qualifying seed, beat Jordan’s Domou Amro 21-6, 21-8 in her second match of the day in Group B, but an earlier 21-19, 21-13 loss to South Korea's Jang Mi Lee proved costly as she finished runner-up in the standings.

Jang Mi Lee triumphed 21-7, 21-3 against Amro to seal top spot and advance through to the opening round of the women’s singles draw, where she will face Japan's Nozomi Okuhara.

The most notable casualty in the men's singles competition was Nepal’s Ratnajit Tamang, who could only manage second spot in Group C after experiencing mixed fortunes in his two outings.

Tamang started well with a 21-17, 21-7 win over Kazakhstan's Dmitriy Panarin, but he missed out on a first-round berth after losing 21-12, 21-13 to Singapore's Zin Rei Ryan Ng.

Ng's victory came after his 21-10, 21-10 win over Panarin and ensured top spot.

Awaiting him in the opening round is Thailand's Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk.

Action also began today at the European Badminton Championships at the Sydbank Arena in Kolding in Denmark.

France's Lucas Corvée was among those to progress from the first round of the men's singles draw, beating Portugal’s Bernardo Atilano 21-6, 21-11.

Next up for him is a meeting with top seed and home favourite Viktor Axelsen, who received a bye through to round two as he bids to defend his title.

In the women’s singles, Finland's Nanna Vainio was one of 11 players to advance thanks to a 21-11, 21-11 success at the expense of Armenia’s Lilit Poghosyan.

Standing between her and a place in the third round is sixth seed Sabrina Jaquet of Switzerland.
