Chungwon Choue is set to be re-elected for a new four-year term as President of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) after the governing body announced he was standing unopposed.

The South Korean was first elected to the role in 2004.

He replaced the controversial Kim Un-Yong following his arrest on embezzlement and bribery charges in South Korea, which ultimately led to him being expelled from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Choue completed the year that Kim had left on his term and was re-elected in 2005 for a four-year mandate, before he reclaimed the position in 2009 and again in 2013.

His re-election is due to be confirmed at the WTF's General Assembly in Muju on June 23 prior to the start of the World Championships in the South Korean city the following day.

Elections for places on the WTF's ruling Council are also scheduled to be held in Muju.

There are 28 candidates standing for 12 positions.

Three positions are available for three positions available for members from Asia, Europe and Pan America, with two on offer for Africa and one for Oceania, with a simple majority required for victory.

Ethiopia's Dawit Asfaw is bidding for one of two African seats against incumbents Driss Halili of Morocco and Issaka Ide of Niger.

New Zealand's Tae Kyung-kim is being challenged for the spot reserved for Oceania by Australia's Hassan Iksander.

Maria Borello of Guatemala is also hoping for re-election, along with Mexican pair Juan Manuel Lopez Delgado and Daiwon Moon, for the Pan American seats.

Canada's Inseon Kim, Mario Mandel Vaisman of Chile and Henderson Turton of Barbados are also standing.

Eight candidates have put themselves forward for the three European roles - Bulgaria's Slavtcho Binev, Jesus Castellanos Pueblas of Spain, Italian Angelo Cito, Dane Søren Holmgård Knudsen, Croatia's Anto Nobilo, Portugal's Jose Sousa, Turkey's Metin Sahin and Anatoly K. Terekhov of Russia.

Sahin, Terekhov and Pueblas are the three incumbents.

Pakistan's Waseem Ahmed, Mohamed A.K. Al-Sulaiti of Qatar, Ahmed Hamdan Al Zeyoudi of the United Arab Emirates, An-Chin Hsu of Chinese Taipei, South Korea's Kook Hyun Jung and Malaysia's Mohd Nazifuddin Bin Mohd Najib are among the nine Asian representatives standing.

They are joined by Jordan's Hazem Ahmad Awwad Naimat, Seyed Mohammad Pouladgar of Iran and Khwaja Hashmatullah Rasa of Afghanistan.

Kook, Naimat and Al-Sulait are the three officials in the running for re-election.

The co-chairs of the WTF Athlete Committee - one man and one woman - are due to be elected on June 28.

The two successful athletes will automatically become ex-officio members of the WTF Council.

"After the candidate application deadline of March 25, South Korea time, the WTF’s Ad Hoc Elections Committee reviewed all applications submitted to confirm that they satisfied the requirements listed in the application," the WTF said.

"The resultant list, together with additional information about such matters as the election procedures, was distributed to members on April 24.

"Even for those positions for which there is only one candidate, electors will be asked to give the candidates their vote of approval."

The full candidate list is available here.
