The Netherlands’ Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen claimed the men’s title at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach World Tour Xiamen Open in China after beating top-seeded Italians Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo in the final.

The Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medallists defeated their opponents 21-14, 21-17 having earlier registered a 20-22, 21-15, 15-8 semi-final win over Poland’s Maciej Rudol and Jakub Szalankiewicz at Guanyinshan Gold Beach.

Victory for Brouwer and Meeuwsen, competing in their first tournament of the year, ends a run of three successive defeats against Nicolai and Lupo, the Rio 2016 silver medallists.

"I feel so happy," Brouwer said.

"It’s been a while since we’ve won a tournament and it’s our first World Tour Open event in the season and we win this.

"It’s really great."

Silver for Nicolai and Lupo is their second medal in Xiamen after taking bronze in 2013.

Rudol and Szalankiewicz bounced back from their semi-final loss to beat Germany’s Armin Dollinger and Jonathan Erdmann 21-16, 21-17 in the bronze medal match and secure their first FIVB World Tour medal.

Dollinger and Erdmann lost their semi-final against Nicolai and Lupo 21-17, 19-21, 18-20.

In the women’s event, Brazil’s Barbara Seixas De Freitas and Fernanda Alves claimed their first FIVB World Tour title together after beating home favourites Fan Wang and Yue Yuan.

The duo, who teamed up at the beginning of the season, triumphed 21-12, 19-21, 16-14.

"We feel really happy," Seixas De Freitas said.

"We had some really tough matches to get here.

"We needed this result and we are so happy, because we are getting better and better.

"This is our first title, so it’s very special for us."

The silver medal for Wang and Yue is their second on the FIVB World Tour, with their first also won in Xiamen in 2014.

Germany’s Victoria Bieneck and Isabel Schneider beat Brazil’s Maria Antonelli and Carolina Horta Maximo 21-16, 21-19 in the bronze medal match.

It ensured the pair, who lost 21-18, 17-21, 12-15 to Wang and Yue in the semi-finals, their first FIVB World Tour medal in only their third tournament together.

Antonelli and Maximo were beaten 23-21, 16-21, 15-17 by fellow Brazilians Seixas De Freitas and Alves in the penultimate round.
