A group of United States soldiers stationed in South Korea have participated in a taekwondo camp hosted by Seoul's Defense Ministry.

According to the Yonhap news agency, this formed part of an event aimed at promoting their understanding of Korean culture.

A two-day taekwondo session placed focus on learning the traditional Korean martial art at kukkiwon, known as one of the global headquarters of the sport.

Taekwondo players from the country's military and national team were also present.

It forms part of a broader half-year programme, named "Friends Forever", aimed at the members of the US Forces Korea (USFK).

Such a programme has been operated by the Ministry on an annual basis since 1972.

It is claimed that a total of more than 19,000 personnel have benefited.

"I appreciate the hard work of the USFK soldiers, who are playing a big role in maintaining stability and peace on the Korean Peninsula," said Defense Minister Han Min-koo in a letter.

"I hope you will continue your efforts to establish the world's strongest and most effective combined defence system."

It comes at a time of heightened focus on troops in the region due to the growing threat from North Korea.
