More than 25,000 athletes took part in competitions sanctioned by the International Ski Federation (FIS) during the 2016-2017 season.

A set of statistics have been released by the FIS following the season’s conclusion and among them is the fact 25,002 competitors took part in the events, which totalled more than 6,000 for the skiing and snowboard campaigns.

During the course of the season, the FIS ran five World Championships and six Junior World Championships.

The sport best represented during 2016-2017 was Alpine skiing, which saw 8,813 athletes participate.

Cross-country skiing had the highest amount of registered athletes with 957, beating Alpine by 259.

Snowboard had 681 registered athletes and freestyle skiing had 620.

The FIS also revealed that during their competitions, 462 technical delegates and 361 judges from 43 nations assisted with the running of the events.

“The FIS would like to thank all organisers and technical officials for their dedicated hard work and significant throughout for the 2016-2017 season,” a statement from the FIS said.
