Fiji beat South Africa in the Hong Kong Sevens final today to claim their first tournament victory of the 2016-17 series.

The Olympic champions scored four tries on their way to an emphatic 22-0 victory at the Hong Kong Stadium.

The opening exchanges were tense until captain Osea Kolinisau broke down field to set up Sevuloni Mocenacagi to score in the corner.

It was not long until the second try came as Mesulame Kunavula bustled over after strong Fijian carrying to make it 10-0 at half-time.

Fiji continued where they left off after the restart with Kalione Nasoko making a superb break to score underneath the posts.

Minutes later, Nasoko struck again to seal the win and also take the Player of the Final accolade.

The result earns Fiji their third consecutive win at the Hong Kong Sevens and sees them jump to second place in the standings on 122 points, nine in front of England.

It is also their first tournament win since Welshman Gareth Baber was appointed their new head coach in November, replacing Ben Ryan.

Englishman Ryan stepped down after three hugely successful years culminating in the Olympic glory at Rio 2016.

South Africa, who missed out on a first-ever win in Hong Kong, remain top of the standings on 145 points with three tournaments left this season.

"With the quality of players we have here, I'm very aware that we should be winning Cups," Baber said.

"I'm also aware that Ben did a great job and that we needed to keep the pressure on South Africa at the top of the table.

"I knew they could do it - it was just a matter of time before we could get it done."

Earlier in the semi-finals, Fiji overcame Australia 33-12 and South Africa defeated the United States 29-24.

Australia went on to beat the US 26-19 in the bronze medal match.

Argentina were one of the four teams to suffer elimination at the quarter-final stage, losing 21-12 to Australia.
