Russian weightlifters dominated the penultimate day of action at the European Weightlifting Championships today, winning both gold medals.

Adam Maligov and Diana Mstieva were both victorious at the Arena Gripe in the Croatian city of Split.

Maligov was one of eight Russian weightlifters banned from competing by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

This decision, made by the IWF Executive Board, followed analysis of the McLaren Report, as well as the advice of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and re-analysis of Beijing 2008 and London 2012 samples.

He put the disappointment of failing to compete in the Brazilian city behind him by taking gold with an overall score of 388 kilograms in the 94kg event today.

Dmytro Chumak of Ukraine, who won bronze at the 2015 World Championships in Houston in the United States, finished in second place.

He also scored 388kg but was forced into silver medal position because of Maliov's lighter bodyweight.

Mstieva lifted 109kg in the snatch section and 132kg in the clean and jerk.

Kisil finished on 240kg while Tatev Hakobyan of Armenia completed the top three with her total of 230kg.

Action is due to conclude tomorrow with the men's 105kg and over-105kg events as well as the women's over-90kg.
