Belarus stunned Canada to advance in Vancouver ©FIH

Hosts Canada threw away a three-goal advantage as Belarus knocked them out of the Hockey World League (HWL) women's round two event in West Vancouver.

The Canadians began the quarter-final clash in style but their exit means they cannot qualify for the HWL semi-finals or qualify for the World Cup through the competition.

Stephanie Norlander tapped in for a 1-0 lead after eight minutes before Hannah Haughn doubled the home advantage.

Rachel Donohoe then scored on the rebound to give Canada a dominant 3-0 lead after just 20 minutes.

Belarus were not done, however, and began the fightback when Volha Skryba deflected a 35th minute penalty corner into the net.

Maryna Nikitsina then reduced the arrears further before Yuliya Mikheichyk sensationally levelled with 43 minutes on the clock via a drag flick.

Canada were stunned and Belarus scored the game's decisive goal when skipper Ryta Batura blasted home from a penalty corner with 51 minutes played.

In the second quarter-final played today, Uruguay edged Mexico 2-1 to progress.

Janine Stanley tapped in to give the Uruguayans a fifth minute lead and Matilde Kliche gave them a 2-0 lead before the break.

Michel Navarro scored a 47th minute penalty stroke to give Mexico hope but Uruguay hung on.

Belarus will now meet India in the semi-finals with Uruguay meeting Chile.

Both last four games will be played on April 8.
