International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has offered a glowing assessment of the impact of the refugee team which competed at Rio 2016 to coincide with international day of sport for development and peace.

According to the IOC, the day "recognises sport’s universality and its power to drive social change and promote a culture of peace".

Bach praised the first-ever refugee team, which featured 10 athletes, to take part at an Olympic Games and claimed they "demonstrated the best of human beings".

A group of refugees could also participate at Tokyo 2020.

It was described as a "work in progress" after Bach met with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Geneva last month.

A refugee team was also due to compete at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Cross Country Championships in Kampala before "document difficulties" prevented their participation.

Bach also claimed the IOC are continuing to support the athletes who made history at last year's Games in the Brazilian city.

"The Refugee Olympic athletes were some of the stars of these Olympic Games,” said Bach.

“They were stars in a way that they demonstrated the best of human beings; they demonstrated determination; they demonstrated what you can achieve if you want to.

"They also demonstrated that they are not simply refugees but that they are human beings; they are athletes who are competing with the athletes of the other 206 National Olympic Committees on an equal playing field.

"We are supporting them so that they can train, that they can enjoy an education, that they can hopefully one day go to university, that they integrate into the society of their host country, and even one day maybe compete for their host country in the Olympic Games or great Championships."

International Federations have also been supporting international day of sport for development and peace here by attending the Peace and Sport booth and taking a photograph as part of the #WhiteCard campaign.

It invites people to take pictures of themselves with white cards, before sharing them on social media.

This year’s theme was “Show us where you Play your Peace”.

Peace and Sport’s Champions for Peace ambassadors, including Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva, have been holding events to mark the day and the #WhiteCard initiative.

"April 6 is one of the most important days in the year for the peace through sport movement," said Joël Bouzou.

"Sport can be a vehicle for change, and on this day we must mobilize athletes, Federations and everyone involved in sport to use their positions to better the world.

“At Peace and Sport, we believe we can make a real difference to the many people around the world who do not have peace in their lives.

"We hope that everyone will join together behind our #WhiteCard campaign and the april6.org platform and celebrate sport’s crucial role in building a brighter future.”
