American Chris Corning and Tess Coady of Australia won the men's and women's slopestyle titles respectively at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Junior Snowboard World Championships in Špindlerův Mlýn today.

Both snowboarders had produced the best scores in qualifying yesterday at the Czech Republic resort and they were able to carry on that form into the finals as each athlete took home a gold medal.

Corning, who won the final FIS Snowboard Slopestyle World Cup event of the season, led home a one-two from the United States in the men's event as his routine yielded a total of 96.75 points.

His team-mate Judd Henkes did enough for the silver medal as he scored 92.25, while Tiarn Collins of New Zealand finished narrowly behind with a score of 92.00 to take bronze.

The result crowned a successful season for the 17-year-old, whose World Cup triumph came at the same location as his Junior World Championships triumph.

He came into the event in Špindlerův Mlýn with silver in big air and bronze in slopestyle from the recent senior FIS Snowboard World Championships in Sierra Nevada in Spain.

Australia's Coady clinched the women's crown by virtue of a score of 94.25 as she topped the podium in front of Japan’s Reira Iwabuchi and Finland's Elli Pikkujamsa, silver and bronze medallists respectively.

Coady blew the rest of the field out of the water as Iwabuchi was some way adrift of her total in second place as she amassed 87.50.

Pikkujamsa followed in third spot having claimed 84.00.

The Australian had also produced a solid display on her last outing in the Czech resort as she was sixth at the recent World Cup event.

"It will be good to ride an already familiar course again, as there were three more days to practice on it so plenty of time to change up and add things into my run,” said Coady before the World Championships.

The event continues tomorrow with the big air finals.
