Gold Coast 2018 mascot Borobi will feature on a commemorative coin to help celebrate next year's Commonwealth Games.

The blue koala will be included on collectable $1 coins, which were revealed today by the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra.

Gold Coast 2018 claim the coins will provide a "perfect souvenir" with the issuing the latest attempt by the organisers to spread excitement for the multi-sport event.

The reveal also comes just days before Gold Coast 2018 celebrate the one-year to go milestone on April 4.

"Just over 12 months ago Borobi announced himself to the world in spectacular fashion, arriving with great fanfare from the back of a helicopter hovering over Burleigh beach," said Peter Beattie, Gold Coast 2018 chairman.

"Borobi has won hearts and minds across the Commonwealth over the past year and is proving to be a great ambassador for all things Gold Coast 2018."

The coins will retail at AUS$15.00 (£9/$11.50/€10.70) and are the third to be released in the build-up to the Games, which will take place until April 15 next year.

Gold Coast 2018 chief executive Mark Peters expressed his delight that the Australian Mint were showing their support.

"The Games are the biggest event in the Gold Coast's history and the release of this special collectible coin in the lead-up to the Games helps to share the story of the Jimbelung [friendly] Games," he said.

"Gold Coast 2018 will create history on the Gold Coast and the series of coins being produced is a perfect historical memento to celebrate this major international event."
