Weightlifter Óscar Figueroa has reflected on his journey to gold at Rio 2016 in the latest episode of the Olympic Channel original series Against All Odds.

The 33-year-old Colombian is a two-time Olympic medallist, representing his country at four Games before retiring from the sport last year, famously taking off his shoes and placing them on the mat after clinching gold in the men's under-62 kilogram category in Rio.

Figueroa had won the silver medal four-years before at the Games in London.

The episode details how Figueroa moved from the city of Zaragoza to Cartago at the age of nine after his family were forced to flee due to Colombia’s civil conflict.

Figueroa discovered his passion for sport in Cartago, which put him on his path towards medal success at the Olympic Games.

To help promote the episode, Figueroa explained his journey to fitness trainer Fausto Murillo, the dedication, injury and success he had to deal with in the past and also his future plans.

“If you believe in yourself, nothing is impossible,” he said.

“I have touched glory, but I never got a hold of it.

“But attaining glory is not easy.

“Even when nobody believed in me, quitting was never an option.”

The documentary series is presented by Olympic Channel partner Bridgestone, with each episode being inspired by the story of an athlete who offers a first-person account of a key turning point in their life.

Figueroa’s story is the fifth installment in the eight-episode series, which began with Spain’s blind swimmer Enhamed Enhamed.

American bobsleigh athlete Bill Scheffenhauer, Fiji’s rugby sevens player Jerry Tuwai and Slovenia’s cross-country skier Petra Madjic have also featured in the series to date.

The final three episodes in the first series are set to be announced in the coming months.
