Switzerland's Roger Federer made a successful return to the Miami Open by defeating Frances Tiafoe of the United States in the second round today.

Federer, who won last week's Indian Wells title and the Australian Open in January, was forced out of this tournament through illness in 2016.

The 35-year-old, who is seeded fourth in Miami, defeated the 19-year-old qualifier 7-6, 6-3 at the Crandon Park Tennis Centre.

Overall victory for Federer in Miami will see him return to the top four in the world.

The men's singles number one seed, Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka, defeated Argentina's Horacio Zeballos in his opening match of the tournament.

Wawrinka, who was beaten by Federer in last week's Indian Wells final, is the top seed for the first time in an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Masters 1000 tournament.

The 31-year-old claimed a comfortable 6-3, 6-4 straight sets win over Zeballos.

Number eight seed David Goffin of Belgium, a semi-finalist in last year's tournament, defeated qualifier Darian King of Barbados 7-5, 6-1.

Croatia's Borna Ćorić provided perhaps the shock of the day when he defeated sixth seed Dominic Thiem of Austria, 6-1, 7-5.

Australia's Nick Kyrgios also reached the third round but was handed a warning from the umpire for swearing at a spectator who called out during a point.

Kyrgios, the 12th seed, dropped his first two service games but went on to overcome Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina 6-4, 6-3.

Russia's Agnieszka Radwanska, seeded fifth in the women's singles, was eliminated by Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni today as round three action was played.

Radwanska was easily beaten by the 26th seed, who eased to a 6-0, 6-3 win in under an hour.

Elsewhere in the women's singles, reigning French Open champion Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain came from one set down to beat China's Zhang Shuai 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Karolína Plíšková, the Czech second seed, defeated Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva 7-5, 6-3 while her compatriot Barbora Strýcová eased to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Slovakia's Jana Čepelová.

Much to the delight of her home crowd, American wildcard Bethanie Mattek-Sands came from a set down to defeat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Action in Miami is due to continue tomorrow.
