World number four and second seed Kei Nishikori of Japan opened his Miami Open campaign with a straight-sets victory over South Africa’s Kevin Anderson today as he aims to go one better than his runners-up finish at last year’s event.

The 27-year-old, who was beaten by Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the 2016 final, claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Anderson to set up a third-round encounter with Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.

Verdasco proved too strong for American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo in a 7-6, 7-5 triumph at the Crandon Park Tennis Centre.

There was also victories today for third seed Milos Raonic of Canada and fifth seed Rafael Nadal of Spain.

Raonic put his injury withdrawal at the recent Indian Wells Masters behind him to overcome Serbia’s Viktor Troicki 6-3, 7-5, while Nadal defeated Israel’s Dudi Sela 6-3, 6-4.

The upsets of the day came from Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who defeated world number nine Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, and Argentina's Guido Pella, a 6-3, 7-6 victor at the expense of world number 13 Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.

The biggest surprise of the day in the second round of women’s singles play saw Indian Wells winner Elena Vesnina of Russia suffer a 6-3, 4-6, 5-7 loss at the hands of Croatian wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic.

Vesnina, the world number 13, is ranked 581 spots higher than Tomljanovic in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.

World number five Simona Halep of Romania beat Japan’s Naomi Osaka 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in her opener, while world number seven Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia defeated Luxembourg’s Mandy Minella 6-2, 6-2.

In a match postponed from yesterday due to rain delays, world number six Garbine Muguruza of Spain produced a superb comeback to overcome American Christina McHale 0-6, 7-6, 6-4.

McHale had held a 6-0, 3-2 lead before play was suspended.

Action in Miami is due to continue tomorrow.
