A new multi-sport facility backed by the Chilean Olympic Committee (COCH) has opened in the country.

The governing body donated CLP25 million (£30,000/$38,000/€35,000) towards the construction of the complex at the San Lorenzo de Recoleta College.

Local school children were present at the opening as well as Chilean athletes and members of sport authorities.

The donation came through the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) OlympAmerica project and helped pay for a sports field, football goals, basketball hoops and a volleyball net.

The COCH became involved after they were contacted by the Ganémosle a la Calle Foundation, which works to help children escape the streets through sport.

Two more projects are planned for this year, including another sports complex in the southern part of the country which was affected by fires last year.

Chile failed to win a medal at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August.

The country sent a team of 42 athletes to the Brazilian city, competing across 16 sports.
