Ireland and France edged closer to the 2018 Hockey World Cup after making the final of a qualifying competition for the sport’s showpiece event.

Both nations have now qualified for the Hockey World League Semi-Finals after winning today at the Hockey World League Round Two competition in Belfast.

Standing in Ireland’s way were Wales and it was the latter who took the lead through Gareth Furlong.

However, the Irish composed themselves and soon got back into proceedings as Shane O’Donoghue, Ben Walker and Neal Glassey to win 3-1.

France came up against Scotland in the other semi-final and goals from Pieter van Straaten and Victor Charlet handing them a 2-0 victory and a place in tomorrow’s final.

Despite their defeats, Wales and Scotland will still have a chance to progress if they win the third place play-off.

They will then have to be one of the two highest ranked third place teams from the other Round Two events.

Egypt finished third in Dhaka earlier this month, while the last Round Two competition starts in Tacariguain Trinidad and Tobago on March 25.

The line-ups for the remaining play-offs for fifth and seventh places were also decided today.

Austria and Poland will battle for fifth after they defeated Ukraine 6-1 and Italy 2-1 respectively.

Both these matches, along with the third place play-off, will be played tomorrow.
