History was made on the ice at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Taipei as Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya and Harley Windsor won gold.

The Australian’s victory in the pairs free skating event gave their nation a first podium topping performance at an ISU Championship.

During their routine, they completed a triple twist, triple Salchow, triple toe-double toe-double toe combination and throw triple flip as they danced to music from the W.E. film soundtrack.

Despite a fall from Alexandrovskava on the triple Salchow, the duo ended up on 163.98 points.

Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii of Russia picked up the silver medal while Chinese duo Yumeng Gao and Zhong Xie won bronze.

“It’s still slowly sinking in. It’s overwhelming for both of us,” Windsor said afterwards.

“We came in this competition very confident, in our training and coaches.

In the performance we just took one element at a time and just tried to focus.

“We made a little mistake, but in the end it sort of worked out for us.”

The other competition today saw Alina Zagitova of Russia take home the ladies short programme title.

Japanese skaters collected the silver and bronze medals with Marin Honda finishing ahead of Kaori Sakamoto.

Tomorrow will see the free dance and ladies free skating take place in the final day of competitive action.
