Lucy Beere claimed to victories as competition continued in Shellharbour ©World Bowls

Guernsey’s Lucy Beere leads the women’s competition at the World Cup Indoor Singles at the Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club in Shellharbour in Australia.

Beere began the day with a 13-3, 7-7 victory over Canada’s Pricilla Westlake, before backing up the triumph with a 11-5, 7-6 win against Carol Broomfield of Spain.

The successes place Beere at the top of the section one standings after five rounds of competition, having scored 18 points with 53 shots.

Australia’s Natasha Scott lies in second place on 18 points, but from a higher total of 63 shots.

Scott beat defending champion Carmen Anderson of Norfolk Island 8-5, 5-10, 4-0 in her opening match of the day.

A 12-1, 9-10, 5-0 win over Israel’s Selwyn Hare continued Scott’s fine start to the World Cup event.

New Zealand’s Jo Edwards tops the second section of the women’s event after beating Japan’s Masako Satoh by an 8-4, 11-4 score, before overcoming South Africa’s Colleen Piketh 7-3, 9-5.

In the men’s event, Australia’s Jeremy Henry suffered his first loss of the competition as he fell to a 5-9, 12-4, 3-2 defeat against Ronnie Duncan of Scotland.

Henry responded in his second match of the day, winning 9-6, 10-6 against John Gaborutwe of Botswana.

He leads the standings with 15 points and 67 shots, with Duncan having now moved into second place overall.
