Francis Dodoo will face opposition for the Presidency of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) from Ben Nunoo-Mensah at an election due to take place in Accra tomorrow.

Dodoo, a former triple jumper, has held the post since 2011.

Nunoo-Mensah, President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation, has launched an ambitious campaign to replace him in the election at the Alisa Hotel.

His manifesto, The Renaissance - Let’s get our sports working again, includes 19 key points identified to help revive sport in the West African country.

These include creating a transparent and accountable GOC, involving all key stakeholders.

The build-up to the election has been overshadowed by a row about whether Dodoo should be allowed to stand following the decision to ban Cilian Walsh, President of the Ghana Shooting Federation, from seeking election as vice-president because he was considered an "alien".

Critics claim that if Walsh, who has dual Ghana-British nationality, is not allowed to stand, then neither should Dodoo who has both Ghana and United States passports.

"If this is anything to go by, I will call for the immediate removal of Professor F. Dodoo’s name from the list as well, on grounds that he holds a dual citizenship status," said Paul Atchoe, President of the Ghana Volleyball Federation.

"A Ghanaian/American.

"He can only be a full blooded Ghanaian to take part in this exercise."

There will be a total of 63 votes at the election, made up of 23 Olympic Federations, 15 from non-Olympic sport and others affiliated to the GOC, with two representatives of the Athletes' Commission.

Besides the President, 11 other officers will be elected and they will make up the GOC Executive Board.

Dodoo succeeded Benson Tongo Baba in October 2011 to become President of the GOC after a vote that lasted 19 hours and was overseen by armed guards.

The 56-year-old secured 38 votes to defeat Kojo Adu-Asare and Emile Missodey, who had two and zero votes respectively.

Dodoo also occupies the role of President of the Ghana Athletic Association.

During his athletics career Dodoo competed in the triple jump, winning the gold medal at the 1987 All-Africa Games in Nairobi in Kenya.

Dodoo also won a silver medal at the 1992 African Championships in Mauritius.

His best finish at an Olympic Games was 17th place at the 1988 Games in Seoul in South Korea where he jumped 16.17 metres.

Ghana sent a team of 14 athletes in five sports to Rio 2016 but failed to win a medal.

They have won a total of four medals since making their Olympic debut at Helsinki 1952.

Three of them were bronze and a silver.

The last one was a bronze won by the men's football team at Barcelona 1992.
