Defending champions Dominican Republic earned victory over the United States in their World Baseball Classic Pool C clash at the Marlins Park in Miami.

The two teams headed into their match fresh from having earned victories in their opening match of the tournament.

In front of a crowd of 37,446, the United States made a strong start as they held a 3-0 lead after four innings of the tie.

The Dominican Republic were unable to reduce the deficit in the next two innings, with the score moving onto 5-2.

Their team staged a late fightback to claim victory as they scored one run in the seventh innings before completing the turnaround by scoring four runs in the eighth.

Victory was sealed when the US failed to achieve any runs in the ninth innings, giving the Dominican Republic a 7-5 win.

Colombia moved level with the US in the Pool C standings as they secured a 4-1 win over Canada in the early game.

They now boast a victory and one defeat from their matches so far but their hopes of reaching the semi-final appear dependent on defeating unbeaten Dominican Republic in their final pool match.
