Britain's rising middle-distance star Laura Muir is emerging as the home athlete to watch at this year's International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships after soaring ticket sales for the women's 1500 metres final.

Muir, winner of gold medals in the 1500 and 3,000m at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade last weekend, is now seen as one of the leading hopes for a British gold as she seeks to improve on her seventh place at Rio 2016.

The 23-year-old is targeting a 1500 and 5,000m double in the Olympic Stadium, due to take place between August 4 and 13.

This means the Scottish runner could feature in five different sessions during the Championships.

According to organisers, tickets for the 1500m final have been the most in-demand since sales re-opened earlier this week.

"I am really looking forward to London and to see that so many people are interested in my events is great for my confidence," said Muir.

"I believe my confidence is showing in my performances and I was delighted to come away with two golds at the European Indoor Championships.

"Doing so many races back to back was great with a view to the IAAF World Championships in London and I can’t wait to put in the hard work and see what I can achieve in front of a massive home crowd."

A total of 5,346 tickets have also been transferred between fans via the official resale platform.

This system was launched in a bid to prevent touts from illegally handling tickets.

"We are delighted at the results coming through following tickets for both the World Para Athletics and IAAF World Championships going back on sale," said London 2017 Championship director Niels de Vos.

"It is great to see interest soar for the women’s 1500m final on Monday, August 7 and really pleasing that so many genuine athletics fans are able to buy and sell any unwanted tickets through the official resale platform.

"We can’t wait for the World Para Athletics Championships to kick off the Summer of World Athletics in just over four months time."
