Pakistan's Wasim Ahmed has confirmed his intention to run for a spot on the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Council and claims to have the support of "several countries".

Ahmed, the President of the Pakistan Taekwondo Federation, announced his decision to stand for election in an interview with The News.

WTF Council elections are due to be held during the General Assembly on June 23 in Muju prior to the start of the World Championships in the South Korean city the following day.

Officials have until March 25 to enter the race and the WTF's Ad-Hoc Election Committee are due to announce the confirmed candidates on April 24.

A total of 12 members will be appointed to the Council at the General Assembly, where the body will also elect its President.

Ahmed, who is bidding to become the first official from Pakistan to take a seat on the ruling Council, says he is confident he can be successful with his bid.

"Yes, I am hopeful about my success," he told The News

"Several countries have assured me of their support.

"I met top officials of several nations at the Fujaira Open in Dubai recently and they promised of their support."

Ahmed also outlined the benefits his potential election to the Council would bring to taekwondo in Pakistan.

"I will be able to help Pakistan get G-1 events and equipment which are our two important issues," he added.

"If a G-1 event is organised in Pakistan, hundreds of foreign players and officials will come here and it will not only be helpful financially but our players will also learn a lot from the foreign players and coaches.

“The problem here is that we don’t know the importance of such posts."
