Qualification for the opening Women’s International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup event of the 2017 season saw Germany’s Lena Schoneborn top the leaderboard today.

The Olympic champion from the 2008 Games in Beijing finished with a score of 1,015 points in the qualifying round at the Fairplex events complex in Pomona, a city in the Los Angeles County.

She will be joined in the individual final, which takes place on Saturday (February 25), by reigning world champion Sarolta Kovács.

In total, 36 women managed to qualify for the final out of the 53 who started.

Among the other names who made it through included London 2012 silver medallist Samantha Murray of Great Britain.

Attention now turns back to the men’s competition with the individual final taking place tomorrow.

The weekend’s action will be completed by a mixed team relay on Sunday (February 26).

The events complex are hosting the fencing, riding and combined shooting and running legs, while swimming is being held at the nearby Claremont Club.
