Nanjing in China will host this year's International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Grand Prix Finals, the sport's worldwide governing body has announced.

The event is scheduled to take place from August 2 to 6 at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre, which served as one of the main venues when the Chinese city played host to the Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2014.

It is due to feature the host nation, who are the reigning Olympic champions following their success at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, and five countries from the group one preliminary round standings.

"I look forward to a great event in August," said FIVB President Ary Graça said.

"I am sure the Chinese fans will be pleased to see their team in action after their victory at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which should guarantee an exciting event for participants, spectators and television and internet viewers."

The event in Nanjing will be the first World Grand Prix Finals to be held in China since 2012, where the United States won the gold medal in Ningbo.

China has staged the competition on six previous occasions in 1994, 1995, 1996, 2007, 2010 and 2012.

The 2017 World Grand Prix Finals begin four days after the group two finals from July 28 to 29 in Ostrava in the Czech Republic, while group three finals will take place a week earlier in Canberra, Australia from July 22 to 23.

Brazil won the last edition of the event in 2016 as they overcame the US 18-25, 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 15-9 in the gold medal match in Bangkok.

The top women's tournament features the best national teams in the world, with pool play eventually leading to the finals which feature the five best teams as well as the hosts.

These are then split into two groups of three before semi-final and final action.

The FIVB launched its bid process for the 2017 World Grand Prix Finals in July of last year.
