Athletes who skied to glory at the recent Alpine World Championships are set to return to action this weekend as they refocus their attention on the race for overall World Cup success.

The International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Skiing World Cup has resumed with a men's event in Kvitfjell in Norway, which got underway with downhill training today.

The women are due to compete in Crans-Montana in Switzerland.

Both the men's and women's World Cup titles remain up for grabs, although current men's leader Marcel Hirscher of Austria has a commanding 432-point advantage over nearest challenger Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway.

Olympic silver medallist Hirscher claimed two gold medals at the World Championships in St Moritz as he won the giant slalom and slalom races, while he also finished second in the Alpine combined event.

The Austrian did not take part in today's training.

Canada's Erik Guay, who became the oldest-ever world champion when he topped the podium in the men's super-G in St Moritz, was quickest in training as he clocked a time of 1min 48.01sec.

Other World Championships medallists who are set to participate in Kvitfjell include Switzerland's Beat Feuz, winner of the downhill race on home snow, and super-G silver medallist Kjetil Jansrud of Norway.

The women's World Cup competition in Crans-Montana begins tomorrow with an Alpine combined event before the super-G follows on Saturday (February 25).

The event is then due to conclude on Sunday (February 26).

American Mikaela Shiffrin is the current overall leader on 1,203 points, with defending champion Lara Gut of Switzerland second on 1,023.

Gut will not compete for the rest of the season, however, as she suffered a nasty injury in the Alpine combined event in St Moritz.

Sofia Goggia of Italy sits in third on 789 points.
