Hosts Iran made an impressive start to the defence of their home Freestyle Wrestling World Cup title after convincingly beating both Turkey and India at the Imam Khomeini Sport Venue in Kermanshah.

Led by Olympic 74 kilograms champion Hassan Yazdani Charati, Iran overcame Turkey 8-0 in the opening match of the competition in Group B.

Yazdani needed just one minute and 44 seconds to down Serdar Boke by technical fall, 11-1, at 86kg.

The Rio 2016 gold medallist moved up to the weight after last year’s Olympic Games and has won all four of his matches to date by technical fall.

Prior to Yazdani Charati's win, there were also successes for Hassan Sabzali Rahimi against Sezar Akgul at 57kg, Behnam Eshagh Ehsanpoor against Cengizhan Erdogan at 61kg, Meisam Abolfazl Nasiri against Safa Aksoy at 65kg, Mostafa Mohabbali Hosseinkhani against Yakup Gor at 70kg, and Peyman Morteza Yarahmadi against Islam Kilic at 74kg.

Rounding out the triumph were victories for Amir Mohsen Mohammadi against Faruk Akkoyun at 97kg and Komeil Nemat Ghasemi against Salim Ercan at 125kg.

Iran, winners of the last five Freestyle World Cup titles, then defeated India by the same scoreline.

Nasiri, Hosseinkhani and Ghasemi were mainstays from the win over Turkey, beating Bajrang Bajrang, Amit Kumar Dhankhar and Krishan Krishan respectively.

The five other victors were Younes Firouz Sarmastidizaji against Amit Kumar at 57kg, Masoud Mahmoud Esmaeilpoorjouybari against Harphool Harphool at 61kg, Bahman Mohammad Teymouri against Jitender Jitender at 74kg, Alireza Mohammad Karimimachiani against Deepak Deepak at 86kg, and Hossein Lotfali Shahbazigazvar against Roublejit Singh Rangi at 97kg.

Mongolia opened their Group B campaign with a 7-1 victory over India before losing 5-3 to Turkey.

In Group A, The United States and Azerbaijan both claimed back-to-back wins and will face each other tomorrow in a decider.

The US defeated Georgia 7-1 and Russia 6-2, while Azerbaijan beat Russia 32-29 on technical points after a 4-4 draw in individual matches and a 16-16 tie on points and then overcame Georgia 4-2.

The third round of group matches are due to take place tomorrow, followed by the finals.
