France took top honours as the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Nations Cup Jumping series began today in Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates.

Philippe Rozier, a member of the French team which won the Olympic team jumping gold medal at Rio 2016, rode the same horse as he did in the Brazilian city, Rahotep de Toscane, as his country finished on just four faults to triumph.

David Frederic, riding Equador van’t Roosakker, Adeline Hecart, on board Pasha du Gue, and Patrice Delaveau, on Aquila, were the other members of the winning quartet.

Both Rozier and Delaveau went double clear to guide their country home.

Second place went to Qatar who finished on eight faults.

Sheikh Ali Al Thani, riding First Devision, was the only other rider to achieve a double clear.

Italy finished third with 12 faults.

France's Chef d'Equipe Philippe Guerdat said: "It's a good sign winning here because, if last year is anything to go by, then we will be winning something big in 2017.

"The aims for this season are to stay in Europe Division One as well as to qualify for the final in Barcelona."

Qatar and hosts UAE also earned places at the Nations Cup Final in Barcelona, with the event serving as a qualifier for countries from the Middle East.

The UAE advanced by finishing seventh as Saudi Arabia, the only other eligible nation, were ninth and last.

Action in the Spanish city will take place between September 29 and October 1.

Germany, who were joint fourth with Switzerland today on 16 faults, are the defending champions.

The next Nations Cup Jumping event will take place in Lummen in Belgium from April 26.

This will serve as a Europe Division One event.
