Mojtaba Amiri and Mohammad Sadeghi Malati were the only Iranian representatives to win in today's qualification round at the 2017 International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach Volleyball World Tour event on Iran's Kish Island.

The duo clinched a 21-19, 21-17 win over Switzerland's Adrian Heidrich and Gabriel Kissling, to advance to the next round of the competition on home sand.

Two other Iranian pairs both lost their matches.

Amir Shoushtarizadeh and Benham Tavakoli were defeated by the Austrian duo Daniel Hupfer and Julian Hörl, 21-16, 21-18.

Reza Assari Naeini and Rasoul Khajeh were also unsuccessful for the host nation.

They were beaten 2-1 by Cole Durant and Zachery Schubert of Australia, 21-14, 21-23, 15-9.

Two Russian pairs also progressed with convincing wins.

Ruslan Daianov and his partner Yury Bogatov eased past Izsak Soos and Tamas Meszlenyi of Hungary, 21-11, 21-16.

They were joined in the next round by fellow countrymen Maxim Sivolap and Igor Velichko, who thrashed Italians Emanuele Monduzzi and Matteo Galli 21-9, 21-9.

The four-day, three-star competition is for male players only.

A law restricting female access was introduced at volleyball matches in Iran in 2012 as an extension of a similar ban in football, but when contacted by insidethegames, the FIVB confirmed all members of the public will be able to attend this year’s event.

The law generated worldwide condemnation in 2014 following the arrest of British-Iranian woman Ghoncheh Ghavami, for attending a World League match.

The FIVB repeatedly pledged to have the ban fully lifted before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games but failed to do so in the face of religious and political opposition.

In October, the world governing body claimed they have been greatly encouraged by the "small positive steps" taken to allow women to attend volleyball events in Iran.

Action is set to continue tomorrow at Kish Island with the round of 32 matches.
