Rio 2016 Olympic champion Kyle Snyder strengthened his place at the top of the men’s 97 kilogram freestyle rankings after winning the Yarygin Grand Prix last month.

The American wrestler became on the 11th man to win at the prestigious event in Russia, defeating the home favourite Rasul Magomedov in the final.

As a result, the reigning world and Olympic champion remains top of the latest rankings published by United World Wresting.

Azerbaijan’s Khetag Gazyumov and Romania’s Albert Saritov remain in the top three, while Magomedov’s runner-up finish has propelled him up to ninth position.

Olympic bronze medalist Geno Petriashvili of Georgia would also strengthen his place in the 125kg rankings, following a victory in Paris.

He remains third overall, but his victory has seen him move closer to Turkey’s Taha Akgul and Iran’s Komeil Ghasemi, with the pair lying first and second respectively.

Only a handful of wrestlers ranked in the top 10 competed during January, according to UWW, leaving the vast majority of the rankings unchanged.

Vladimir Khinchegashvili of Georgia and the United States’ Logan Stieber remain top of the 57kg and 61kg standings respectively, while Russia’s Soslan Ramonov leads the 65kg division.

World military champion Alan Khugaev of Russia was the biggest mover in January, having previously been unranked in the 125kg division.

His compatriot Dauren Kurugliev also triumphed at the event, with victory in the 86kg event seeing him rise to seventh overall.

Russia’s World Championship bronze medallist Akhmed Chakaev was one of the wrestlers to move up near the top of his division’s rankings.

His win in the 61kg event in front of a home crowd proved enough to move up to third in the overall rankings.
