Rio 2016 weightlifting champions Kianoush Rostami of Iran and Sopita Tanasan of Thailand have been named as the Jeno Boskovics athletes of the year.

The awards, run by the International Weightlifting Federation's (IWF) magazine World Weightlifting, attracted 38,000 votes for the male and female prizes.

Rostami received a massive share of more than 20,000 votes after his Olympic gold medal performance in Rio de Janeiro in August.

The 25-year-old won the under-85 kilogram title to improve upon the silver medal he won in the same division at London 2012.

Double world champion Rostami came in front of runner-up Lasha Talakhadze of Georgia, the Rio 2016 champion at over-105kg.

Nijat Rahimov of Kazakhstan, Olympic gold medallist in the under-77kg category, placed third.

Twenty-two-year-old Tanasan was recognised after winning the women's under-48kg gold medal in Rio.

She received 1,200 more votes than China's second placed lifer Deng Wei, who won the women's under-63kg Olympic title.

Chinese Taipei's Hsu Shu-ching, the under-53kg winner who defended her London 2012 crown, placed third.

Only 55 votes separated second and third places.

The awards are named after Hungarian Boskovics, a journalist who was editor-in-chief of World Weightlifting.

He was heavily involved in the sport until he died in 2010.
