Russia has increased its budget for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Documents have revealed that spending will increase by 19.1 billion rubles (£260 million/$324 million/€302 million) from 619.7 billion (£8.4 billion/$10.5 billion/€9.8 billion) to 638.8 billion (£8.7 billion/$10.8 billion/€10 billion), according to TASS.

No detailed reasoning for the increase has been revealed with just more than half of spending for the flagship football tournament coming from the federal budget.

The rest will be split between regional authorities and other organisations.

Competition in Russia will take place between June 14 and July 15 in 2018, across 11 host cities.

However, the country remains a controversial choice as host due to the doping allegations surrounding the nation.

In December, the second part of the McLaren Report alleged that more than 1,000 Russian athletes had been implicated in a state-sponsored doping scheme spanning from 2011 to 2015.

The bid process for the 2018 World Cup also remains under criminal investigation, while Russia was criticised for the violent behaviour of some its fans at the 2016 European Championships in France.

The concerns have led some voices to call for the tournament to be moved, but FIFA President Gianni Infantino has said this will not happen.

In an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, the Swiss-Italian said "boycotts and bans have never solved any problems".

Russia’s preparations will be put closer under the microscope when they host next year’s Confederations Cup - an eight-team tournament comprised of the host nation, the current World Cup holders plus the six continental champions.
