Australian clothing company Hard Yakka has been named as the official uniform provider for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The firm will supply uniforms for the Games workforce as well as the 15,000 volunteers who will operate at next year's event.

Participants in the 2018 Queen's Baton Relay will also be kitted out in Hard Yakka gear.

"I’m told by the Hard Yakka team that yakka is a word derived from the indigenous word for work," said Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) chairman Peter Beattie.

"The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be the largest event in this country in a decade.

"I’m looking forward to seeing Hard Yakka draw on its vast experience to create a uniform that fills each volunteer with pride.

"It will be a quintessential Australian event suitably dressed by a legendary Australian clothing outfitter."

Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe also backed the tie-up, which comes after Gold Coast faced criticism in some quarters for supposedly overlooking Australian firms and staff.

"To have one of Australia’s most recognised clothing companies fitting out thousands of our team is wonderful," he said.

"More than anything it demonstrates the national reach of these Games as we take Queensland and this country to the world like never before."

GOLDOC chief executive Mark Peters said those wishing to volunteer would be able to do so from Monday (February 6).

"After half a decade of planning it’s all about to happen and those wishing to volunteer for the time of their lives will have their opportunity to register online from this Monday February 6," he said.

"We are looking for 15,000 people who want to be a pivotal part of welcoming the world to our shores in just over a years’ time.

"And look very well dressed doing it."
