Home favourite Francisco Pasquel held off older brother Patricio to top the podium at the penultimate leg of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) World Cup Jumping North American League Western Sub-League in Mexican city Guadalajara.

The 32-year-old and gelding Naranjo delivered the only double clear performance and won the four-man jump-off in 44.24sec.

In an effort to beat his younger sibling, Patricio Pasquel - on his home-bred, 10-year-old gelding Babel - attempted to take a stride out of a bending line and subsequently rode through the fence rather than over it.

He ended up second in 43.57, while Antonio Chedraui Eguia, also of Mexico, and 11-year-old gelding Ninloubet landed third place in 47.22.

"Going clear as fast as I could was my strategy," Francisco Pasquel said.

"My horse was a little nervous and shifted a little to the right so I didn’t push him.

"I knew my brother was going to catch me on the time but lucky for me, he had a rail.

"I had a nice time and a little bit of luck."

Another Mexican, Miguel Maron Kahwagi, also featured in the jump-off but had to settle for fourth spot in 46.32.

Following today’s event, Enrique Gonzalez of Mexico continues to hold top position in the Western Sub-League standings on 42 points.

The final Western Sub-League event is due to be held in Thermal, California on February 11.

There was also action today in the 2016-17 FEI World Cup Jumping Western European League as Spain’s Eduardo Alvarez Aznar claimed victory in the 11th leg in Swiss city Zurich.

In a nine-horse jump-off against the clock, the 33-year-old rider produced a thrilling run to post a winning time of 36.20 with Rokfeller de Pleville Bois Margot.

Austria’s Max Kuhner was the last rider into the ring and finished second with Cornet Kalua in 38.03.

Rounding out the podium was Colombia’s Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo, who claimed third spot with Admara in 38.43.

"He’s not a horse I normally ride so quickly, so I took a chance today and I’m so happy because it paid off," Aznar said after posting his first points on the series table.

Aznar, son of legendary six-time Olympian Luis Alvarez Cervera, now heads to the second-last leg of the qualifying series in French city Bordeaux next weekend.

Asked if he thinks he can take maximum points again in order to qualify for the Final at the end of March, he said: "It’s difficult enough to win one without winning two-in-a-row - but we can always try."
