The opening two days of the event, which is part of the International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup, were won by Rydzek in dramatic sprint finishes.

With two ski jumps and a longer 15 kilometre cross country route, Frenzel hoped he would be able to eventually fend off his rival.

Rydzek would produce jumps of 106 and 105.5 metres to top the ski jumping standings, with the efforts giving him an 18 second lead going into the second stage of the competition.

World champion Bernhard Gruber of Austria placed second, with his compatriot Mario Seidl and Frenzel just two seconds further back.

Frenzel would begin the cross-country stage of the event at a frantic pace and closed down on Rydzek, before attacking him after five laps.

Unlike the previous two days, the two-time world champion did not have an answer, with Frenzel going solo to earn victory in a time of 37min 32.2sec.

“These were three hard days and it was my goal to always push,” said Frenzel, whose 11 race winning streak at the event was ended on Friday (January 27).

“Johannes had fantastic competitions this weekend, he didn’t make my life very easy.

“It’s just amazing how everything fell into place for me today.

“It’s such a great feeling to be on the top - for the fourth time in a row.

“I don’t know what to say, I am just really, really happy.”

Rydzek, who would lose the overall World Cup lead to Frenzel, would have to settle for second place on the final day of the event after ending 30sec adrift.

The podium was completed by Gruber, who finished 1:18 behind the day’s winner Frenzel.
