Russia’s Alexander Tretiakov earned his second victory of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup season by a narrow margin in Königssee.

The Olympic champion had led the early World Cup standings, but dropped out of contention after four Russian sliders were provisionally banned by the IBSF as part of a doping investigation.

Tretiakov was among the skeleton athletes named in the McLaren report which alleged they were among 1,000 Russian athletes implicated in a doping scheme, but the IBSF later ruling that there was not enough evidence to keep their suspensions in place.

The Russian found himself trailing after the first run of competition in Königssee, as he clocked 50.27sec.

South Korea’s Sungbin Yun was leading the event after crossing the line in a time of 50.07.

However, he would be unable to hold on to first position as Tretiakov clocked 50.14 in the second run to end with an overall time of 1min 40.41sec.

Yun would end 0.05 down in second, with Alexander Gassner of Germany ending a further 0.14 behind in third.

“I always try to win, however, the other athletes do, too,” said Tretiakov.

“The World Championships will be a completely different race here, which is why I will keep on training and preparing.”

Yun tops the World Cup standings on 1,213 points, with defending champion Martins Dukurs of Latvia just a point behind going into the final event of the season.

The event comes just weeks before the German resort the hosts for the World Championships, which were switched to the venue last month after the IBSF stripped the event from Sochi because of the Russian doping crisis.

The track is scheduled to play host from February 13 to 26, the same time-frame initially proposed for the event at the 2014 Winter Olympic host.

Johannes Lochner will hope today's triumph in the two-man bobsleigh competition in front of a home crowd acts as a omen ahead of the Championships.

The German would end in a time of 1:38.54 in the event with his brakeman Joshua Bluhm, the 2015 and 2016 World Championship silver medallist.

Reigning world and European champion Francesco Friedrich was 23 seconds adrift with Thorsten Margis, with the Germans sharing second place with the United States’ Steven Holcomb and Carlo Valdes, who ended on the same time.

Friedrich is the overall World Cup leader on 1,095 points, with Holcomb lying 20 points down in the standings.

In the IBSF Para-Sport World Cup, Latvia’s Arturs Klots was crowned as the para-monobob European champion by finishing the event in 1:38.34.

His Latvian teammate Lauris Zutis won silver in1:38.65, while Corie Mapp of Britain rounded off the podium in 1:39.19 at the event in Oberhof.

The United States Eric Eierdam won the overall skeleton World Cup title, with the world champion ending ahead of Britain’s Matthew Richardson and fellow American Ryan Gautieri.

Canada’s Lonnie Bissonnette won the para-monobob World Cup, with Latvia’s Alvils Brants and Brian McPherson from Canada rounding off the podium.
