The Netherlands' Jiske Griffioen is a step closer to a third straight Australian Open wheelchair women’s singles title as she made the final.

Just three games were dropped by Griffioen today in Melbourne Park as she eased past 2014 champion Sabine Ellerbrock of Germany 6-2, 6-1 in the semi-final round.

Griffioen, who won gold in the women’s singles and doubles competitions at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, now faces a rematch of the 2015 final against Japan’s Yui Kamiji, who saw off Lucy Shuker of Great Britain 6-3, 6-2.

In the men’s singles, Belgium’s Joachim Gerard could not continue the form which saw him cause a surprise, knocking out Britain’s defending champion Gordon Reid.

Gerard lost his semi-final 6-3, 7-6 to Nicolas Peifer of France, who will play Gustavo Fernandez in the final.

The Argentinian had to see off another French Challenger, Stephane Houdet, 6-3, 7-5 in the competition’s other semi-final.

In the men’s quad singles, defending champion and home favourite Dylan Alcott chalked up his second win of the tournament by beating Britain’s Andrew Lapthorne 6-4, 6-1, giving the crowd something extra to celebrate alongside Australia Day.

Heath Davidson could not repeat Australian success as he lost the day’s other men’s quad match to David Wagner of the United States 6-4, 6-2.
