Ireland's Tommy Shaughnessy has been appointed as the first Sports Director of the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF).

A competitive athlete since the age of 10, the 58-year-old is a past Latin and Standard champion as well as an adjudicator and trainer for the last 40 years.

He is also currently serving as President of DanceSport Ireland.

Shaughnessy has resigned as a Member of the WDSF Presidium, effective immediately, to focus upon his news role.

However, he will attend and participate in all meetings of the world governing body's Presidium and WDSF Managing Committee, and will remain as chairperson of the WDSF Membership Commission.

"Tommy Shaughnessy will be a tremendous asset as our new employed WDSF Sports Director," said the body's President Lukas Hinder.

"He is one of the most technically-qualified and one of the best-liked people in DanceSport.

"This is a 'big win' for WDSF.

"We are very lucky to have him and very pleased that he has accepted appointment to this new WDSF position."

Second vice-president Michael Eichert has also been unanimously elected to assume the chair of the Sports Commission that was left vacant after the resignation of former chairman Marco Sietas.

Eichert has been on the Commission since 2006.
