Britain’s Gordon Reid will begin the defence of his men’s wheelchair singles Australian Open title on Wednesday (January 25), with the world number one set to take on Belgium’s Joachim Gerard at Melbourne Park.

They met in last year’s final, Reid emerging the 7-6, 6-4 winner to secure the first Grand Slam title of his career.

Having been beaten by his compatriot Alfie Hewett at the Sydney Open Super Series event earlier this month, Reid responded by reaching the final of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Melbourne Open to boost his confidence before his title defence.

"I had a disappointing start to this Australian trip, but managed to up my level in Melbourne in difficult conditions," said Paralympic champion Reid, who also won the inaugural Wimbledon singles title last year.

"So I arrive at Melbourne Park in a good place ready to defend my title.

"It is obviously a different situation than I've ever been in before, coming to a Grand Slam as defending champion.

"But seeing the courts here brings back great memories and gets me excited to start competing here again."

He will be joined in the draw by Hewitt, who faces a tough debut at the event when he takes on world number two Stephane Houdet of France.

Defending women’s champion Jiske Griffioen will begin her campaign with a clash against fellow Dutch player Aniek Van Koot.

The pair clashed in last year’s final, Griffioen winning 6-3, 7-5.

Australia’s home favourite Dylan Alcott will seek to retain the quad singles title, with the competition beginning with a round robin series.

Alcott’s compatriot Heath Davidson, Britain’s Andy Lapthorne and the second seed David Wagner of the United States will also compete in the tournament.

Doubles competitions will also take place throughout the week.
