Lars van der Haar earned a solo victory in the men’s International Cycling Union (UCI) Cyclo-Cross World Cup event in Hoogerheide.

The Dutchman was able to thrive on home soil in the absence of the newly crowned World Cup champion Wout Van Aert of Belgium, who having sealed the overall classification last week opted to rest a knee injury.

Van der Haar emerged from the main field in the closing stages of the race, which was contested over 30 kilometres.

He would move clear of his compatriot Mathieu Van der Poel, who initially followed but eventually dropped back into the pack.

Van der Haar secured victory in a time of 1 hour, 3min and 32sec, with Belgium’s Tom Meeusen ending 44 seconds adrift in second.

The Netherlands’ Corne van Kessel was a second further behind, narrowly edging out France’s Clement Venturini and Belgium’s Kevin Pauwels to secure third place.

Van Aert would end first in the final World Cup standings, with Pauwels and Meeusen completing an all Belgian top three.

The women’s race saw an all-Dutch podium today, with Marianne Vos securing victory in a time of 42:48 over 18km.

Vos would finish 13 seconds clear of her compatriot Lucinda Brand, while Annemarie Worst was a further two seconds behind.

The Netherlands’ Sophie De Boer won the overall World Cup title, ending in front of Belgium’s Sanne Cant.

Czech Republic’s Katerina Nash would end in third place overall.

Vos’ victory confirms her as one of the favourites to win the world title, with the Championships set to take place from January 28 to 29 in Bieles in Luxembourg.
