Top seed Vladimir Samsonov claimed a comfortable victory over Poland’s Jakub Dyjas today to reach the men’s singles quarter-finals at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Hungarian Open in Budapest.

The 40-year-old Belarusian registered an 11-5, 3-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-5 win over Dyjas to set up a last-eight encounter with Shang Kun, who beat fellow Chinese player Zhou Yu 11-9, 14-12, 12-10, 11-3.

Among those also through to the quarter-finals is China’s Lin Gaoyuan, an 11-4, 9-11, 11-4, 11-4, 11-8 victor at the expense of France’s Simon Gauzy.

Next up for Lin is South Korea’s Joo Saehyuk, who overcame another Frenchman, Adrien Mattenet, 11-5, 11-8, 11-7, 12-10.

In the women’s singles, China’s Chen Meng continued to justify her top seeding by getting the better of Belarus’ Viktoria Pavlovich in a 12-10, 6-11, 11-5, 11-1, 12-10 win.

Compatriot Chen Xingtong awaits in the quarter-finals after she won a seven-game thriller against fellow Chinese Che Xiaoxi 7-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-8, 11-13, 8-11, 13-11.

Monaco’s Yang Xiaoxin and The Netherlands’ Britt Eerland are also set to meet in the last eight having both come through their round of 16 ties.

Yang beat Sweden’s Matilda Ekholm 3-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 11-8, 12-10, while Eerland defeated Singapore’s Zeng Jian 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 12-14, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9.

The finals of the men’s and women’s doubles competitions were also decided today, with both matches due to take place on Sunday (January 22).

Fifth seeds Fang Bo and Zhou Yu of China beat German pairing Ruwen Filus and Ricardo Walther 1-11, 11-6, 11-9, 5-11, 11-8 to make the men’s doubles final.

Standing between them and success is Brazil’s Hugo Calderano and Gustavo Tsuboi, who defeated Hungary's Nandor Ecseki and Adam Szudi 5-11, 11-7, 15-13, 9-11, 11-6 in the semi-finals.

The women’s doubles final will be between China’s Chen Xingtong and Li Jiayi and the pairing of Ekholm and Hungary's Georgina Pota.

Chen and Li overcame top seeds Maria Dolgikh and Polina Mikhailova of Russia 11-5, 11-7, 11-2 to progress from the last four, while Ekholm and Pota downed Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chia-Hsuan and Lin Po-Hsuan 11-7, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8.
