Defending champions Ivory Coast opened their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Gabon today with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Togo at the Stade d'Oyem.

The draw takes the number of stalemates at the tournament so far to four out of six matches, with Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo the only teams to win so far.

Chances proved few and far between this afternoon but Paris Saint-Germain defender Serge Aurier came closest to snatching all three points for Ivory Coast as he headed a cross narrowly wide with just two minutes remaining.

Another good chance for the reigning champions arrived after just 10 minutes but Jonathan Kodjia fell as he was about to shoot before Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa blocked the loose ball and cleared the danger.

Togo, who had drawn twice and lost twice to Ivory Coast in four previous Africa Cup of Nations meetings, kept their opponents largely at bay throughout the contest.

Wilfried Zaha, who was making his first competitive appearance for Ivory Coast after he switched international allegiance following two friendly appearances for adopted country England, failed to have any impact and was substituted on 70 minutes.

Former Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid forward Emmanuel Adebayor surged forward on a counter-attack, only for Sylvain Gbohouo to save a chance from Mathieu Dossevi.

In today's other match, the Democratic Republic of Congo beat Morocco in their Group C opening fixture, despite finishing with 10 men.

Junior Kabananga scored the game's only goal in the 55th minute before substitute Lomalisa Mutambala was booked twice in 16 minutes to see red.

The Congolese, who went on strike last week over unpaid bonuses, were nearly behind in the opening stages as Morocco's Mbark Boussoufa saw his effort rebound of the goal frame.

Kabananga pounced on a mistake by Munir Mohamedi in the Morocco goal to score from close range, 10 minutes into the second half.

Morocco's Youssef El-Arabi missed with two headed chances late on as their opponents fell to nine men after defender Gabriel Zakuani was forced off injured with no substitutes remaining.

The substitute first glanced a header wide before he forced a save from the goalkeeper as he headed on target from a cross.

Zakuani, who plays in England's third tier, returned to the action for stoppage time as his side claimed all three points.

Action in Group D is scheduled to get underway tomorrow.

Seven times champions Egypt, the most successful team in the tournament's history, open their campaign against Mali while Ghana take on Uganda.

Both games are due to take place at Stade de Port-Gentil in Port-Gentil.
