Senbere Teferi of Ethiopia won the women's race at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Cross Internacional de Itálica Cross Country race in Santiponce in Seville today.

Teferi won the third Spanish leg of this season’s IAAF Cross Country Permit series in a time of 25min 52sec.

The Beijing 2015 IAAF World Championships 5,000 metres silver medallist, who was fifth at the Rio 2016 Olympics, finished 13 seconds in front of her closest rival.

Bahrain’s Rio 2016 Olympic steeplechase champion Ruth Jebet came home second.

The 20-year-old, who also holds the world record for the 3,000m steeplechase with her best of 8:52.78 in Paris last August, was making her first appearance of 2017 and crossed the line in 26:05.

Portugal's Ines Monteiro completed the top three in a time of 27:29 while the highest placed Spaniard was Ana Lozano del Campo, who was roared over the line in fourth by the gathered crowd in a time of 27:38.

Bahrain’s Aweke Ayalew made a phenomenal debut at this event as he cruised to the men's title.

The 23-year-old opened his season in style with a convincing win in Atapuerca, at the first IAAF Cross Country Permit meeting of the winter, in November.

One week later in Allonnes he had to settle for second place but Ayalew bounced back in Venta de Baños in December with an overwhelming victory over Jairus Birech.

Ayalew maintained his recent form with victory in Seville as he crossed the line in a time of 31:36.

Eritrea’s Teklemariam Medhin, the 2010 world cross-country silver medallist, finished in second on his first appearance of the winter season.

Medhin finished six seconds behind Ayalew as he finished in 31:42.

Tafese Seboka of Ethiopia took third in 31:44 while Ayalew’s compatriot, El Hassan El Habbassi, mirrored his fourth-place finish in Alcobendas with another today in 31:49.
