The best Para-Nordic skiers in the world will compete in Ukraine from tomorrow at an International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Cup in Western Center.

The event, which will run until January 20, will be the last major competition before the Finsterau 2017 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships.

Biathlon and cross-country races will all be part of the event in the men’s and women’s visually impaired, sitting and standing categories.

Sweden's Zebastian Modin will be the man to beat in the visually impaired skiing events as he currently leads the rankings with an 80 point cushion.

Elsewhere, Ukraine’s Sochi 2014 cross-country silver medallist Ihor Reptyukh and Paralympic biathlon champion Grygorii Vovchynski will compete in the men’s standing.

"I think everything will be on a high level and everybody will enjoy the most difficult route in Europe," Reptyukh said.

"I believe that performing in my native country will help me to show good results.

"We will take to the routes like a duck to water. We have studied all of the difficult areas and know what to expect."

The host country will also be hoping to secure several wins in the men’s sitting courtesy of overall rankings leader Maksym Yarovyi.

Sochi 2014 four-time biathlon and cross-country bronze medallist Oksana Shyshkova in the women’s visually impaired, and multiple-Paralympic medallist Iuliia Batenkova and four-time Paralympic champion Oleksandra Kononova in the women’s standing will also be ones to watch for Ukraine.

"The World Cup in Ukraine will be a great occasion," Kononova said.

"This is the first time our country will have hosted such a high profile event and we are really proud to welcome the other nations.

"We feel even more responsibility to perform well.

"We hope that each victory will show our country’s sporting strength and power.

"We are ready."

In the women's sitting, American Oksana Masters, the overall leader, will not take part.

Belarus' second-placed Lidziya Hrafeyeva will look to take advantage.

The World Championships, in Finsterau, Germany, will take place between February 10 and 19.
