Hungary’s Balint Korpasi and Ramazan Abacharaev of Russia ended 2016 top of their respective United World Wrestling (UWW) rankings following success at last month’s Wrestling World Championships for Non-Olympic weights.

Korpasi triumphed in front of a home crowd at the UWW event, which took place in Budapest on December 10 and 11.

The 71-kilogram Greco-Roman competitor achieved five straight victories to earn the world title, defeating Moldova’s Daniel Cataraga in the gold medal match.

His victory ensured the Hungarian remained at the top of the division’s rankings at the end of the year, which have now been published.

Cataraga remains in second place.

Abacharaev claimed the first world title of his career in Budapest, with the Russian securing gold in the 80 kilogram division.

He defeated Turkey’s Aslan Atem in the Greco-Roman final, which has ultimately resulted in Abacharaev rising to the top of the world rankings.

Atem is second in the end of 2016 standings, with Hungary’s Laszlo Szabo and Jonibek Otabekov occupying third and fourth respectively.

The six Olympic weight categories have seen very little change, with two of Abacharaev’s compatriots, Roman Vlasov and David Chakvetadze, heading their respective piles.

Vlasov, the back-to-back Olympic champion in the Greco-Roman 75kg division, tops the rankings in that class, while Chakvetadze will be the man to beat in 2017 in the Greco-Roman 85kg division after also striking gold at Rio 2016.

Rio 2016 Olympic champion Ismael Borrero Molina remains top of the 59kg Greco-Roman standings, with his fellow Cuban Mijain Lopez Nunez, a triple Olympic champion, leading the 130kg Greco-Roman heavyweight category.

The remaining end of year number ones are Serbia’s Davor Stefanek and Armenia’s Artur Aleksanyan, with the pair topping the 66kg and 98kg Greco-Roman standings respectively.
